The bright and colourful mural bringing community to the backstreets of Stockport

Some 6,945 miles away from the rich and vibrant neighbourhood of La Boca in Buenos Aires lies Stockport. While the two may initially seem far apart from each other, they have a lot more in common than meets the eye - particularly in the last few days.

Since September 3, a collective of Argentinian artists have taken up residency in the borough as part of a project to transform one area into its own mini La Boca of sorts. Once a dilapidated and crime-rife area of Buenos Aires, La Boca has gone on to become one of the most popular tourist spots in Argentina thanks to its colourful murals and artwork from local artists.

The artists - Eva Luna Maissa, Patrica Salatino, Melina Lluvia, Omar Gasparini and Alejandro Fenochio - worked with Stockport-based collective GRIT Studios to transform a huge grey wall on Hopes Carr into their own artistic slabs of concrete full of colourful depictions of people, culture and life.

Within the huge mural, a jumping frog, a man playing a harpsichord, a washing line, a couple dancing and even circus performers and a woman dancing next to a post box can all be found.

There are also industrial nods and references to construction - both aspects that play important roles in the heritage of Stockport and La Boca.

As the project got underway last week, muralist Patrica Salatino told the M.E.N she hoped the project would 'build a bridge between La Boca and Stockport - both metaphorically and quite literally’.

Now, with the finished project in eyesight, she says: “For us, the opportunity to come to England and work with local people to create something was magical.
