The booming Greater Manchester town where locals are being priced out

The cost of new flats in Stockport town centre could price out locals, a Labour councillor has warned. New apartments built next to Stockport Transport Interchange have been listed on property website Rightmove, with prices starting around £1,000 a month for a one-bedroom property.

Two-bedroom flats are priced between £1,200 and £1,500 a month on the website, marketed by Property Sense Stockport, with tenancies starting in June. The nearly 200-home development was a joint venture from Cityheart and Rise Homes, built alongside Stockport's new interchange and Viaduct Park as part of regeneration work.

But David Meller - leader of Stockport Labour Group - warned that the town faces the risk of gentrification and excluding local people due to rising rental prices. He told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "We were at the forefront of the regeneration work that is positively transforming our town centre, and led to so much positive press right across the country.

"However, during my time on this council, I've always been clear that we must learn from experiences elsewhere and not succumb to the pitfalls of gentrification. "We can't price local people out of Stockport. My fear is some haven't listened to this."

Housing supply is an issue in Stockport, with demand for new homes increasing sharply as more people look to move to the area.

Stockport's Labour MP Navendu Mishra has said there's a 'crisis' of supply and demand in the borough and has previously accused the Lib Dem council of not addressing the housing problems.
