"The best we've seen of him" - Sunderland manager praises Manchester United loanee Amad

Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray claimed that Manchester United loanee Amad's performance against Wigan Athletic was his best for the Black Cats since joining the club.

The 20-year-old attacker came off the bench at half-time as he helped Mowbray's men secure an important 2-1 victory over Wigan on Saturday afternoon. It was Sunderland's first Championship win in five matches, and Amad played a key role in the home side's narrow win.

While the Ivorian didn't score or assist in the Black Cats' triumph, his performance led to widespread praise from supporters, with his loan boss also lauding the United man.

Mowbray insisted that his performance was his best showing since arriving at the Stadium of Light in the summer. Mowbray said: "I think that’s the best we’ve seen of him – listen, he’s got flashes, he’s a wonderful, wonderful footballer.

"On the training ground he’s so sharp, quick and clever with the ball – he just has to add the end product for me. Every day I’m in his ear, so he knows, but the work ethic was good today, and the physicality he brought to the job was good and I was pleased for him."

It comes after Amad was recently criticised by Mowbray, who expressed concerns about his failures inside the final third. The young attacker even dropped down to play for Sunderland's Under-21s against Leeds United earlier in the week.

Amad has started just once since joining the Championship outfit, but has featured in every league match since leaving Old Trafford to join the Black Cats. His impressive performance against Wigan could see him start for Sunderland against Blackburn at Ewood Park on Tuesday night.
