“That’s obviously the aim” – 25-year-old addresses his future at Sunderland
Sunderland winger Patrick Roberts has revealed that he would like to stay at Sunderland beyond this summer, after penning down a six-month contract at The Stadium of Light in January, in conversation with the Sunderland Echo.
The 25-year-old has featured eight times for the Black Cats since making the move from Manchester City at the start of the calendar year, starting two of those matches.
Roberts particularly shone last time out against Lincoln City and will be hoping that he can build from that and feature more regularly from the start.
Speaking to the Sunderland Echo about staying at The Stadium of Light beyond the summer, Roberts said: “That’s obviously the aim but you don’t know what can happen in football.
“Right now I can only focus on what we are doing right now and think about that in the future.
“That’s the aim I want to be back playing football, enjoy it again and I’m enjoying my time here and just want it to continue.”
The verdict
Roberts has struggled to see consistent game time over the last few years, with this being the best chance for him to really kick on and be included on a frequent basis.
Evidently possessing lots of talent, Roberts brings creativity and excellent ball-carrying abilities to the fray and could play a pivotal role in what remains of this season.
Should he continue putting in performances like the one against Lincoln City at the weekend, then he will be confident of securing a fresh deal with the Black Cats.
There is still lots of football to be played, and with promotion to the Championship still being eyed up, Roberts will have the majority of his focus on that.
