Tesco to make change to scanners that could soon appear in all UK stores

Tesco shoppers who use on-the-go scanners could soon be encouraged to buy certain products as they do their shopping.

A Tesco boss has outlined plans to show adverts to shoppers as they move around the store. Customers using the supermarket's Scan as you Shop service will be able to see the advertisements for products and offers on the self-scanning devices as they browse the aisles, reports the Retail Gazette.

During a supplier event in London, Tesco's Media and Insight Platform unveiled various advertising initiatives, including the change to Scan as you Shop.

Lee Roberts, head of sales, outlined the concept. He said: "I'm about to go into the frozen aisle and on my Scan as you Shop device I'm delivered a display message for a particular product, offer, or promotion that's in that frozen aisle. And this can be replayed as you navigate your way around the rest of the store."

There is no official launch date for the move yet, reports the Mirror.

Tesco also revealed plans to increase the use of "store wraps", turning the exterior of superstores into large-scale billboards.

The retailer announced plans to roll out the large-scale advertisements on the outside of its stores at up to 50 locations across the UK.

The move follows a successful trial with PepsiCo, which displayed a massive 46-meter-wide and 10-meter-high advert on the entrance wall of Tesco's Vauxhall superstore to promote its UEFA Champions League sponsorship.
