Tesco and Sainsbury's shoppers warned over own-brand Aldi price match products

Earlier this month, ASDA divided shoppers when it introduced its Just Essentials range. The range, which can easily be spotted by it's bright yellow packaging, means people can get an entire weekly shop for a little over £30.

Following a fierce debate sparked by the packaging, shoppers have been placing more of an emphasis on supermarket own-brand products. Now shoppers have been warned about own brand products at Sainsbury's and Tesco.

Research shows two major supermarkets have been cutting the number of lower-cost items on sale. Sainsbury’s has reduced the number of items in its Price Lock scheme by more than a fifth this year.

The cost of Price Lock products is linked to those in rival supermarket Aldi - often voted the cheapest in the UK. But Sainsbury's has around 1,630 Price Lock items now, compared to 2,100 at the start of 2022, Retail Gazette reports.

Price Lock guarantees last for eight weeks at a time. A Sainsbury's spokesperson said: “With costs going up, we are working hard to keep prices low. We are investing over half a billion pounds to ensure the items people buy most often are on the shelves at the best prices and we are confident our Sainsbury’s Quality, Aldi Price Match campaign and Price Lock promise are making a big difference to our customers.

"In stores and online customers can now find new, low prices on everyday staples - from chicken breasts to mincemeat, milk, onions and strawberries. The bold steps we are taking to focus on value means all our customers will find great deals when they shop with us and do not need to go anywhere else to get the best prices on their weekly shop.”
