Terrified passenger said 'I'm going to die' just moments before 100mph tragedy

A passenger in a speeding car said 'I'm going to die' just moments before a young mum was killed in a horror crash.

Sharna Brook Burgin was killed in the Mercedes crash in Sheffield in February last year, Yorkshire Live reports. The 23-year-old died in hospital from a 'devastating brain injury'.

Driver Leon Roberts, 25, reached speeds of up to 100mph before losing control of the Mercedes and ploughing into a taxi in a layby, Sheffield Crown Court heard. Just moments before the crash, one passenger in the car said they thought they 'was going to die'.

The 'cowardly' driver fled the scene before handing himself into police the next day. Police found he had traces of cocaine, cannabis and alcohol in his system.

Roberts has now been jailed. The court heard how the crash happened on the A57 Sheffield Parkway on February 26 last year.

Prosecutor Ben Campbell said Roberts was driving Sharna and three other passengers into Sheffield after offering them a lift. Footage was played to the court as Mr Campbell told how Roberts reassured his passengers he had 'not had a drink' when they suggested getting a taxi.

He said: "There was loud music in the vehicle. When he was driving in the overtaking, outside lane, his driving was described as 80mph to 90mph and a passenger told him to slow down and he did not say anything in response."

Mr Campbell said one of the passengers recalled that when the Mercedes they were in joined Sheffield Parkway, the 'music increased' and both her and Sharna were 'shouting at him to slow down'.
