Teenagers who murdered Prince Walker-Ayeni face justice as judge makes ruling on their identities being revealed
The teenagers found guilty of murdering Prince Walker-Ayeni in Moss Side have faced justice. Two boys, both 16, were convicted of murdering the 17-year-old, who was stabbed three times as he was chased through the streets.
Prince died days before his 18th birthday. Minshull Street Crown Court heard two groups - one made up of the two defendants and the other made up of Prince and a friend - bumped into each other by chance on Raby Street, Moss Side on April 4.
Within minutes a scuffle broke out and Prince and his friend ran away.
One of the boys - known as Boy 1 - stabbed Prince, as the second defendant - known as Boy 2 - also chased him. The pair fled and left Prince to die. The boys cannot be named for legal reasons.
Boy 1 and Boy 2 denied murder, claiming they acted in self-defence. But following a three-week trial, which ended in November, both were found guilty by a jury.
The pair have now been given the youth equivalent of a life sentence. Boy 1 was ordered to serve at least 15 years, while Boy 2 must serve at least eight-and-a-half years.
Judge Mrs Justice Ellenbogen told the pair: "Prince's mother loved her son just as much as your mothers loved you. As a consequence of your actions on April 4, she will never see him again.
"It is clear that in his short life, Prince had not always made the right choices. But whatever his flaws, he did not deserve to die. He deserved the opportunity to better himself and to make a positive contribution to society. By reason of your actions, he will never now be able to do so."
The Manchester Evening News applied for reporting restrictions to be lifted following the convictions, allowing their identities to be made public.
