Teenager, 18, who died on train tracks in Stockport is named

A teenager who tragically died in an incident at Gatley train station has been named.

Emergency services were called to Pendlebury Road in Cheadle at around 10am on October 27 last year following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

George Thompson, 18, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

A pre-inquest review into George’s death was opened at Stockport Coroner’s Court on Friday morning (March 11) with coroner Alison Mutch proceeding over matters.

George’s parents Dave and Caroline Thompson attended the short review via video link.

Addressing both parents, Ms Mutch said: “I would like to express how very, very sorry I am for the loss of your son. It’s very clear you had a lot of respect for him.”

Following his death, George was recognised during the Emirates FA Cup First Round match between Bolton Wanderers and Stockport County at the University of Bolton Stadium on November 7.

In the 18th minute of the game, a minute's applause was held in memory of the dedicated Stockport County fan.

Hillgate Boys FC, a local youth football club in Stockport which George had played with, was amongst those paying tribute to him.

On the club’s Facebook page, a tribute wrote: “George Thompson was an amazing young man who touched many of the lives of the people he met.

“Unfortunately his life ended early when he came up against one hurdle too many and took his own life.”

The post added: “For us as a club we felt it a privilege and an honour that George chose to wear the blue and white stripes of Hillgate with pride.
