Teenage Dumfries Tennis star receives £1,000 boost for sporting endeavours

Dumfries teenage tennis star Dominik Czopek has been awarded £1,000 from Cunninghame Housing Association to help with his sporting endeavours.

The 13-year-old St Joseph’s College pupil is ranked first in Scotland in his age group and has had a busy few months.

In June he secured a win in the men’s open category in Yorkshire and subsequently played in the men’s open in Sunderland where he finished as runner-up. Also that month he saw winning action at the Play Your Way to Wimbledon South of Scotland County Finals in Prestwick, progressing to this month’s national finals in Wimbledon.

He was also selected to represent the LTA at the Wimbledon Championship demonstration and tour last month as one of 12 UK children – and the only one from Scotland.

Dominik continues to be completely self-funded through the support of his parents, however, such a sport can prove costly when it comes to travel and accommodation in competing in competitions away from home – as well as essential equipment.

The funding provided by Cunninghame Housing Association – his second year award as part of a three-year sponsorship – and presented by its senior development officer, Alan Somerville, will continue to help alleviate some of the financial burden to allow Dominik to concentrate on progressing in his sport.

It has come from the Association’s Making Our Communities a Better Place Fund, which operates throughout the year (April 1 to March 31) until the allocated funding is exhausted.

CHA chairperson, Janet Strang, said: “We are delighted to be able to provide financial support to Dominik, enabling him to continue in his chosen sport where he is demonstrating hard work and determination pays off.”
