Teenage boys charged after reports of woman being raped in Wigan

Two teenagers have been charged with rape following an incident in Wigan.

Police were called to reports of a woman being raped at an address in the Aspull area at around 1.55am on Monday, April 18. After an investigation was launched, two teenage boys, - a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old - have been charged.

The 16-year-old boy, from Essex, was charged with rape and appeared at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates' Court on Saturday (April 23). The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been remanded in custody to appear at Bolton Crown Court on Monday, May 30.

A 17-year-old boy from Bedfordshire - who also cannot be named for legal reasons - has been charged with rape. He is due to appear at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates' Court today. Greater Manchester Police are continuing to investigate the incident. The victim is continuing to receive specialist support.

In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: “Two teenagers have been charged with rape after a report of a rape was received in Wigan a week ago. A 16-year-old boy from Essex - and who cannot be named for legal reasons - was charged with the rape of a woman, alleged to have occurred in the early hours of Monday 18 April. He appeared at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates' Court on Saturday 23 April and has been remanded in custody to appear at Bolton Crown Court on Monday 30 May.
