Teenage boy, 16, accused of Bury town centre murder could go on trial in the summer

A teenage boy accused of murdering a young man in Bury town centre could go on trial in the summer.

The boy, 16, who can't be named due to legal reasons, appeared before Manchester's top judge during a brief hearing on Tuesday morning.

He did not enter a plea, and appeared in court via video link.

Abdikarim Abdalla Ahmed, 18, died on Friday following an incident on Market Street in the town. Police received a report of a stabbing at about 3.50pm.

Mr Ahmed, known to loved ones as Abdi, was rushed to hospital but was later pronounced dead.

During a preliminary hearing at Manchester Crown Court, Judge Nicholas Dean QC, the Honorary Recorder of Manchester, told the defendant: "I have made some directions, notably that your trial will take place on August 1 this year, with an estimate of five to seven days."

The defendant was remanded in custody, and a further hearing was scheduled for May.
