Teddy Sheringham suggests Scott McTominay as wildcard Manchester United captain

Teddy Sheringham isn't optimistic about the quality of Manchester United's squad but picked out Scott McTominay as the player who could be Erik ten Hag's leader on the field for the coming years.

The former United striker has good reason to be negative after the team registered the club's worst-ever Premier League points tally last term. Even Player of the Year David de Gea did not escape criticism as Sheringham assessed the players that new manager Ten Hag will have to build his team around.

Sheringham hasn't got much positive to say about any of United's current players, aside from McTominay who he believes has the 'mentality and commitment' to ensure Ten Hag's instructions are carried out on the field.

"It’s tough times for United. I don't think there's anyone who can be assured of their spot in the United team next season. There aren’t three outstanding players that Ten Hag should build the team around.
