Targett causing problem, Burn solid again: Chelsea vs Newcastle United half-time ratings

Newcastle United went into the break with their Premier League clash against Chelsea still goalless after a solid first-half performance. The Magpies lined up with a back five, with Jamaal Lascelles restored to the starting line up and looked solid in the opening stages.

Chelsea were restricted to few chances, while Newcastle looked dangerous on the break, without threatening Mendy in the home goal. Jacob Murphy did well to create an opening, but his shot was high and wide.

Newcastle then saw a deep free-kick met by Fabian Schar, but Mendy was alert to prevent the ball cross the box, while at the other end, Mason Mount and Tino Werner both had efforts off target. Dan Burn then went close with a flicked header from Matt Targett's cross as United looked to press.

Chelsea's Kai Havertz went into the book for a flying elbow on Burn. VAR checked the incident but deemed a yellow card was sufficient. Just before the breka, Miguel Almirón's powerful volley from 20 yards was beaten away by Mendy.

Here's how Lee Ryder rated the Newcastle players in the first half at Stamford Bridge.

Has been kept on his toes with Chelsea on the front-foot.

Working away.

Relatively steady so far.

Has had his work cut out on return.

Unlucky with flicked header that flew wide. Some convincing clearances.

Some teasing deliveries. Caused a few problems.

Thrown in for a start against a stellar midfield cast

His know-how and quality is their for all to see. Won a couple of free-kicks. And has taken sting out of the game.

Stinging shot at the end of the half.

One effort flew wide

Offering aerial presence.
