Sutton-at-Hone table tennis umpire Lyndon Griffiths honoured to officiate at this summer's Commonwealth Games in Birmingham

Lyndon Griffiths is relishing the chance to officiate at a home Commonwealth Games after being selected as an umpire for the table tennis and para table tennis events at Birmingham 2022.

The 72-year-old from Sutton-at-Hone, near Dartford, will be one of 18 English and 18 international officials working under the direction of English referee Karen Tonge OBE at the Games, which will get under way on July 28.

Griffiths, who has been umpiring for 12 years, said: “I’m delighted, I must say.

“It’s an honour to be able to umpire at that high level and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Griffiths is an experienced international umpire, having done so at the Copper Box in London during the 2018 Team World Cup.

This summer’s Commonwealth Games will be Griffiths’ first major international multisport event. He added: “That will be a first for me and, yes, there’s a bit of pressure - but I’m looking forward to it.”
