Suspended Adamawa REC seeks indefinite adjournment in court case

The suspended Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari has pleaded with the Adamawa State High Court to adjourn the case against him indefinitely (sine die).

Ari, through his counsel, M. Tijanni, approached the court presided over by Justice Benjamin Manji Lawan with an application dated January 21, 2025, requesting a stay of proceedings in the substantive case.

The defendant argued that the adjournment was necessary pending a ruling on an application he had earlier filed before the Court of Appeal in Yola.

However, the state’s counsel, Chief L. D. Nzadon, vehemently opposed the application, describing it as a blatant affront to the rule of law and the administration of criminal justice.

Chief Nzadon argued that under the law governing criminal matters, no application of this nature should be entertained and urged the court to dismiss the request outright.

After hearing submissions from both counsels, Justice Benjamin Manji Lawan adjourned the case to January 30, 2025, for a ruling on the application.
