SuperSport coach Gavin Hunt ahead of Sundowns challenge: 'We'll be competitive and have a go'

With a solitary league win in their opening five matches of the new season, it's fair to say that SuperSport United's campaign has not exactly gone to plan.

And with games coming thick and fast, it's not about to get any easier as they face Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 quarter-finals at Tuks Stadium on Sunday night (18:00).

SuperSport coach Gavin Hunt has a rather thin squad to work with, but the experienced mentor has no plans to back down.

"We've got a young squad, an energetic squad and we understand the task at hand," Hunt told reporters on Thursday.

When probed whether the squad's youthfulness was proving problematic, Hunt responded bullishly: "I'm quite surprised about the squad, with the results not coming, the performances are good, and the attitude has been good."

Regarding the missing players, Hunt confirmed that there were several unavailable including 18-year-old Thapelo Maseko, and the three Sundowns loanees Thabang Sibanyoni, Grant Margeman and goalkeeper Ricardo Gross.

With SuperSport having a poor record against Sundowns, Hunt has no desire for an open, free-flowing game against Sundowns.

"If we have a game of football we will lose. We need to do things different. We have got an idea," stated Hunt.

"We'll be competitive and have a go," a defiant Hunt concluded.
