Supermarkets blasted over 'shocking' Easter egg price rises as some double in price

A number of popular Easter eggs have doubled in price this year while some of the chocolatey treats have shrunk in size. New research shows chocolate companies including Maltesers, Lindt and Ferrero Rocher have increased their prices as global cocoa prices have reached a historic high.

Figures, released by consumer company Which?, also revealed that supermarkets Asda, Tesco, Waitrose and Ocado had some of the highest prices on their shelves.

Maltesers Truffles Luxury Easter Egg has increased by £5, costing just £8 in Waitrose last year to £13 - up 62.5%. In Asda, a Lindt Five Gold Bunny Milk Chocolate has gone from £2 to £3.11 - up 55.6%.

A Lindt Lindor Milk Chocolate Egg Plus Milk Mini Eggs previously cost £6.50 in Tesco however this year it will set you back £10 (up 53.8) while a Ferrero Rocher Golden Easter egg has also gone up from £10 to £15 in the store - up 50%.

Here are some of the worst examples Which? Found. All prices were averages for the month of February 2023 vs February 2024, and include regular discounts but not multibuys or loyalty prices:

• Maltesers Truffles Luxury Easter Egg (286g): from £8 to £13 at Waitrose - up 62.5%

• Lindt Five Gold Bunny Milk Chocolate (50g): from £2 to £3.11 at Asda - up 55.6%

• Lindt Lindor Milk Chocolate Egg Plus Milk Mini Eggs (215g): from £6.50 to £10 at Tesco - up 53.8%

• Ferrero Rocher Golden Easter Egg (250g): from £10 to £15 at Tesco - up 50%

• Kinder Surprise Giant Egg (220g): from £10 to £15 at Tesco - up 50%

• Maltesers Mini Bunnies White Chocolate Bag (58g): from £1 to £1.50 at Tesco - up 50%

• Terrys Chocolate Orange Mini Eggs (80g): from £1 to £1.50 at Tesco -
