Supercomputer's tight play-offs race for Bolton Wanderers as Derby County & Portsmouth verdicts made

Bolton Wanderers climbed into the League One play-off spots earlier this week following victory over MK Dons.

Goals from Dion Charles and Gethin Jones either side of half-time secured three points for Wanderers on the road at Stadium MK. Combined with results elsewhere, the Whites now sit fifth in the table.

Challenging for a place in the top six was the objective this season before a ball was kicked in anger and Wanderers are currently in the positions they will hope to be in and around by the start of May. They sit fifth as things stand ahead of this weekend's home game against Peterborough United.

Throughout the campaign, football statistics website FiveThirtyEight is forecasting how the League One table might finish after the results of every matchday, with the campaign reaching the climax of the regular season at the start of May before the play-offs.

As things stand, Ipswich Town and Sheffield Wednesday are tipped to be the two sides clinching automatic promotion and playing back in the Championship again. The play-off places are predicted to be keenly contested.

Wanderers are being tipped to finish fifth and be on the same number of points as Plymouth Argyle on 76 each. They are tipped to finish just a point ahead of Barnsley in seventh.

Portsmouth and Derby County are the other two sides predicted to finish in the top six. At the opposite end of the table, Accrington Stanley, Forest Green Rovers, Morecambe and Burton Albion are being tipped for relegation to League Two.

Predicted League One final table (correct as of September 15, 2022)

1. Ipswich Town – 92 pts

2. Sheffield Wednesday – 89 pts

3. Portsmouth – 85
