'Super talent' George Russell tipped to 'regularly' beat Lewis Hamilton this season

Mercedes driver George Russell is being tipped by former Formula 1 driver Robert Doornbos to regularly beat his team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the 2022 season.

The two British drivers form an exciting-looking pairing on the grid this coming year in F1, with them aiming to maintain Mercedes’ dominance from 2014 as we enter a new era in the sport.

Certainly, it’s going to be a tough challenge with the new rules and regulations coming into play but there’s no doubting both men have the ability to perform right at the front, and Doornbos thinks that Russell will have it in him to regularly win races and take points away from Hamilton.

Writing in a column for the Dutch edition of Top Gear, Doornbos explained:

“With Hamilton returning in 2022, we will have part two of Lewis versus Max.

“George Russell could also play a role in this. I expect Russell to be a regular winner of the day. He’s a super talent that only comes along once every few years.

“Over the whole season I think Hamilton knows how to do it just a little bit better, but Russell will regularly take points away from Lewis.”

Undoubtedly, George isn’t just at Mercedes to be a rear-gunner for Lewis – he is there to try and win races and even challenge for the championship.

He has the speed and quality to regularly be right at the sharp end in 2022 if the car is quick enough, and it is all going to come down to experience as to whether he can surmount a championship challenge in his first year at Mercedes.

Without a doubt, though, he is one to watch this season in F1.
