Super Falcons face Lucy’s test in Olympic qualifier

Nigeria will begin its quest to return to the Olympic Games football event today when the Super Falcons meet Ethiopia’s Lucy in the second round of the Paris 2024 African qualifying series.

Nigeria was drawn by in the first round, while Ethiopia dispatched Chad 10-0 on aggregate to get to this stage.The Super Falcons started congregating in Addis Ababa on Sunday and as at yesterday, all the invited players, except U.S.-based Ifeoma Onumonu, who was expected to join her mates yesterday.

Led by France-based goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, the 19 players in the team are defender Oluwatosin Demehin, midfielder Rasheedat Ajibade and forward Asisat Oshoala.

Other players set for the game billed to hold at the Abebe Bekila Stadium in the heart of Ethiopia’s capital are goalkeepers Tochukwu Oluehi and Monle Oyono, defenders Rofiat Imuran, Michelle Alozie, Nicole Payne, Akudo Ogbonna, Jumoke Alani and Comfort Folorunsho, as well as midfielders Esther Onyenezide, Toni Payne and Peace Efih.

There are also forwards Uchenna Kanu, Gift Monday, Omorinsola Babajide and Opeyemi Ajakaye. The players had their first feel of the pitch yesterday ahead of the game scheduled to kick off at 3.30 p.m. Ethiopia time (1.30 p.m. Nigeria time).

The return leg will hold at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja October 31, 2023, with the winner on aggregate to meet the winner of the Cameroun/Uganda fixture for a place in the final round of the series.
