Sundowns taste defeat in CAF Women's Champions League final: 'We lost with pride'

Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies were put to the sword by ASFAR Club in the CAF Women’s Champions League final at the Stade Moulay Abdellah on Sunday evening.

Masandawana were reduced to nine players after receiving two red cards and the South Africans never recovered from the numerical disadvantage as the Moroccan side cruised to a 4-0 victory.

"Congratulations to ASFAR, they played better than us today. I can't fault my girls," Sundowns Ladies coach Jerry Tshabalala told reporters.

"We gave everything we could but it's all in the game of football. We win some we lose some.

"Unfortunately, it wasn't our day, and I'll say this, we lost with pride and we lost to a better team."

An early goal by Fatima Tagnao in the 13th minute from the spot kick gave the home side the advantage early they deserved before Sundowns Ladies were reduced to 10 players.

In the 33rd minute Rhoda Mulaudzi was sent off following a second yellow card as adjudicated by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

However, despite being a player down, the Sundowns Ladies still rattled on until the half-time but after the break they were dealt another blow.

Zanele Nhlapo was given her marching orders for a second bookable offence in the 52nd minute, reduced her side to nine players.

The Moroccan side then doubled down on pushing players forward and it resulted in Ibtissam Jraidi grabbing three goals in quick succession to complete her hat-trick.
