Sundowns survive late Chippa scare to record 10th consecutive win

Mamelodi Sundowns have made it 10 wins in a row as goals from Teboho Mokoena and Peter Shalulile helped them edge past Chippa United 2-1 at the Loftus Versveld Stadium on Tuesday evening. 

It was a fairly even start as Sundowns dominated possession while Chippa were waiting to pounce on any errors.

The first chance fell the way of the hosts as early as the ninth minute after a driving run from Sphelele Mkhulise found the in-form Cassius Mailula, but his shot went well wide and did not trouble Chilli Boys keeper Lloyd Kazapua. 

After more pressure from the Brazilians, the deadlock was broken as unmarked captain Teboho Mokoena headed in from a fine cross from Maphosa to give the home side the lead in the 14th minute. 

Despite the setback, Chippa responded immediately as a strike from Etiosa Ighodaro forced Sundown's goalkeeper Ronwen Williams into a fine save straight from the kick-off.

Williams looked relieved as he was in search of his eighth clean sheet in a row.

Sundowns piled on more pressure as goal scorer Mokoena had plenty of time in the middle of the pitch. He was able to spot a run from Aubrey Modiba who he picked out on the edge of the box, however Modiba could not beat the keeper from the tight angle. 

The second half was more of the same as Sundowns dominated possession while the away side were looking to take advantage of any lapses of concentration from the hosts.

After a quiet opening few minutes, Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena made changes that made a near instant impact after a mazy run from substitute Gaston Sirino, however despite all his efforts, he could not find a teammate in the box.
