Sunderland player ratings as Anthony Patterson shines and Ross Stewart disappoints at Wimbledon

New Sunderland boss Alex Neil earned a point in his first game in charge - but it was not enough to stop the Black Cats slipping further off the promotion pace.

The Black Cats fought out a 1-1 draw at AFC Wimbledon, with the Dons taking the lead through Luke McCormick's penalty awarded in controversial circumstances inside the first 20 minutes.

Alex Pritchard equalised with a free-kick before half-time, and Wimbledon ended the game with ten men after McCormick was sent off late on for a second bookable offence, but Sunderland could not find a winning goal.

Here's how James Hunter rated the Sunderland players.

Made a string of saves to prevent Wimbledon scoring further goals

Still learning, but another decent game from the young right-back

Did OK on his return to the side and had a late chance to score a winner

Unfortunate with the handball decision for the penalty, and otherwise did OK

Caught out a couple of times, but showed a willingness to come forward

Played just in front of the back four but this wasn't his best performance

Plenty of effort and industry, and sent a late chance over the bar

Struggled to make an impact

Tried to make things happen, but nothing came off

Sunderland's most creative player, he scored another great free-kick and set up a big chance for Stewart

Looked tired. Had one good chance but made the wrong decision and failed to get a shot away

For Winchester 62mins. Kept the midfield ticking over

For Clarke 62mins. Didn't get a sight of goal

For Stewart 73mins. Still looks well off-the-pace

Carney, Dajaku, Embleton, Xhemajli
