Sunday becomes UK’s hottest day of the year so far, Met Office confirms

The Met Office has confirmed Sunday (May 28) became the UK's hottest day of the year so far, beating Saturday’s high by a tenth of a degree.

Temperatures reached as high as 24.4C in some areas, including in Plymouth, narrowly topping Saturday’s record of 24.3C in West Yorkshire.

Pictures from the weekend showed people enjoying the sunny weather and soaking up the rays in Piccadilly Gardens and Cotton Field Park in Manchester, with warm weather also predicted for the bank holiday Monday (May 29).

Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey predicted more sunshine on Monday but cooler temperatures. He said: “Generally, there will be a lot of dry weather around and a good amount of sunshine still.

“Hazy cloud pushing through at times might make the sunshine hazy in places. Temperatures then going to be feeling cooler along eastern coastal areas.”

It is understood Wales and south-west England will be the warmest on Monday. In Greater Manchester, temperatures reached around 20C on Sunday, with similar highs predicted for the bank holiday Monday.

A Met Office spokesman added: "The area of high-pressure which has brought fine conditions across the UK over the last few days is forecast to persist through the bank holiday weekend and into next week."
