Sue Gray report into lockdown parties published as Boris Johnson issues apology - live updates

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has publicly apologised in the House of Commons following the publication of a redacted report by a senior civil servant into lockdown parties at Downing Street.

Sue Gray, who has been leading the inquiry, handed in the report to Number 10 on Monday after days of wrangling and delays and it was later publicly released.

Her report found that "at least some of the gatherings" she investigated represent "a serious failure to observe not just the high standards expected of those working at the heart of Government but also of the standards expected of the entire British population at the time".

She added: "At times it seems there was too little thought given to what was happening across the country in considering the appropriateness of some of these gatherings, the risks they presented to public health and how they might appear to the public."

The report also found there were "failures of leadership and judgment" by different parts of No 10 and the Cabinet Office at different times.

It added: "Some of the events should not have been allowed to take place. Other events should not have been allowed to develop as they did."

The report went on to talk about "excessive consumption of alcohol", saying it was "not appropriate in a professional workplace" at any time.

It added: "Steps must be taken to ensure that every Government Department has a clear and robust policy in place covering the consumption of alcohol in the workplace.."

Following the report's release Mr Johnson issued an apology on the floor of the House of Commons, telling MPs: "I want to say sorry. I'm sorry for the things we simply didn't get right and the way this matter has been handled."
