Successful drivers and tricky braking points: What you should know ahead of the Canadian GP

Formula 1 returns to Canada to host the 51st race in this North American country. The race, returning after a two-year absence, is one of the trickiest tracks on the circuit and is renowned for being notoriously hard on the brakes.

While tricky to navigate, teams and drivers love returning to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, a permanent fixture since the race's running in 1978. Though speeds of around 320km/h can be reached, the real highlight is Turn 14. Better known as the Wall of Champions. Drivers have often been caught out of the esses before hitting the main straight as they try to get as close as possible to the wall for the best possible exit.

Here are some interesting stats you should know going into this weekend's race.

The stats that matter

Canada has hosted 50 races, with two at Mont-Tremblant and eight at Mosport Park. Since 1978, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on the man-made island in Montreal has been the spiritual home of the Canadian Grand Prix. The Montreal circuit has been named after erstwhile Ferrari driver, Canadian Gilles Villeneuve. Villeneuve's son, Jacques, won the F1 Drivers' championship in 1997.

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve consists of 14 corners, with many at the end of long straights. Though hard on the brakes, the track's layout is particularly demanding on the engine and gearbox, too, which could be to Red Bull's advantage and Ferrari's disadvantage.

Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton are tied on seven wins each at the Canadian GP, all of which came, expectedly, at this year's venue. The two F1 legends are also tied on most pole positions at the track, with six each. Getting the most out of one's car
