Success debate could signal start of new Manchester United vs Arsenal rivalry

Rio Ferdinand sparked a heated debate over what constitutes a successful season when speaking about Manchester United and Arsenal's respective run-ins this week.

Speaking on his Vibe with Five podcast, Ferdinand said that United winning a trophy along with a third-place finish would mean the club have enjoyed a more successful season than the title-challenging Gunners. He said: “If Arsenal don't win the league and Man United finish third and just the one trophy, they have had a better season.”

This might be controversial given the difference in narratives surrounding the two clubs, with Arsenal being heralded as Man City's only credible title contenders this term and United labelled a work in progress during Erik ten Hag's first year in charge. However, as it is well known, there’s only one champion in the Premier League. Second and third are the exact same with no additional benefits for the clubs or players, as both guarantee Champions League spots.

Ferdinand spoke from the viewpoint of a player, saying: “If you’re a player, forget about fans, and you finish third and win a trophy, Carabao Cup whatever it is and the team above you finish second and win no trophies, who is the happier player.”

He is well placed to make judgements on success, winning the Premier League on six occasions, along with a fair few domestic and continental trophies. Therefore, his view that United will be happier with their season in this scenario, is quite a statement.
