Struggling Bohs part company with manager Keith Long

Bohemians have sacked manager Keith Long, with Trevor Croly and Derek Pender to take charge of the team on an interim basis.

The announcement comes a day after a 3-1 home defeat to St Patrick's Athletic that leaves the Gypsies in sixth place in the table on 33 points, closer to bottom side UCD than league leaders Shamrock Rovers.

The win leaves Pat's within touching distance of the European qualification spots, while Bohs linger a further 12 points behind the Inchicore side, with the frustration around Dalymount tangible as a crescendo of boos rang out at full-time.

Long assumed the role in 2014 with the club in relegation difficulties, leading the team to a fifth-place finish in his first season in charge.

The 48-year-old oversaw the club move towards a debt-free existence with a strong emphasis on developing underage talent.

European football was secured for the first time in eight years in 2019 and a year later the club finished second in the league, resulting in a memorable Europa Conference League campaign last year.

Long also led Bohs to a first FAI Cup final in 13 years last season where they were defeated on penalties by St Patrick's Athletic.

Ten defeats from 27 league games saw the board make the decision to remove Long from his position.

"As well as the many great nights he delivered over his time in charge, the contribution that he has made in working with the club to build structures and lay foundations for future success cannot be overstated," a club statement read.

"It is with regret that league results this season have fallen short of his aspirations and most committed of efforts."
