Strictly Come Dancing fans 'gutted' as 'potential winner' withdraws from BBC competition

Strictly fans were 'gutted' after it was confirmed Amanda Abbington quit the BBC dance competition series. Many viewers reckoned Amanda and her dance partner Giovanni Pernice were 'potential winners' of the series.

Strictly star and host Fleur East confirmed the Sherlock actress had withdrawn from the programme on spin-off show It Takes Two. On Monday night's show (October 23), Fleur said: "We've received the news that Amanda is not returning to Strictly."

She then read out an official statement from a Strictly spokesperson, which read: "Amanda Abbington is unable to continue in Strictly Come Dancing and has decided to withdraw from the competition. The show wishes her all the best for the future."

Concerns Amanda may have quit the series grew after she was unable to perform on last weekend's show citing her health. Her absence was addressed at the beginning of Saturday night's show (October 21) as presenter Claudia Winkleman said: “Now as you may have noticed, Amanda and Giovanni are missing from the lineup. Due to medical reasons Amanda is unable to perform this week.”

Taking to Twitter, Strictly fans were quick to share their thoughts on the news, with many sad to see Amanda go. @MsNottledim wrote: "Gutted that Amanda Abbington has withdrawn. I was enjoying watching her. #Strictly potential winner".

Meanwhile @pontylady agreed: "so sad to hear that #AmandaAbbington won't be continuing her journey on #Strictly with Gio for me she was potential winner. Get well soon Amanda" as @MsMeesyTheMinx echoed: "I'm sorry to
