Stretford Mall and town centre set to be TRANSFORMED - here's how the area will change

Multi-million pound plans to transform Stretford Mall and Stretford town centre including new waterfront bars and restaurants along the Bridgewater Canal have been approved.

Much of the Mall building itself is set to be demolished, although shops on King Street, Aldi and the multi-storey car park are currently proposed to remain.

Developers say they will restore the historic King Street and open up access to the Bridgewater canal to make space for new waterfront bars and restaurants.

They also want a ‘Makers Yard’ area for small independents and the evening economy, with outdoor seating, restaurants and bars.

The outline planning permission includes 800 new homes (a mixture of town houses and apartments with some affordable housing) as well as space for shops, restaurants, bars and educational space.

It would be centred on the Mall site, with new buildings set to be a maximum of eight storeys in height.

The plans would also demolish two single storey units adjacent to Stretford House fronting the A56, as well as water tanks within the site and the multi-storey car park access ramp.

The aim of the changes is to “re-connect Stretford through the redevelopment of Stretford Mall and Lacy Street creating a vibrant and mixed-use town centre anchored around a sequence of new public spaces.”

Developers conducted 18 months of public consultation about the proposals and said 71pc of the consultation respondents were in favour.
