Stormers hit with long-term Roos injury blow

Following their 35-5 United Rugby Championship (URC) defeat to Ulster in Belfast on Friday night, the Stormers were hit with more bad news regarding Springbok No 8 Evan Roos.

Roos left the field in the 22nd minute with a knee injury, and following the match, head coach John Dobson confirmed that he would be on the sidelines for an extended period.

The injury to Roos occurred when Ulster flanker Nick Timoney and eighthman Duane Vermuelen cleared him from a ruck in the 14th minute, which saw him twist his knee as he fell back awkwardly.

After the game, Roos was seen on crutches.

Speaking to reporters, Dobson confirmed that Roos was likely to be on the sidelines for some time.

“It's knee ligaments, but I am not sure of the grade or the scale yet. It was a nasty cleanout, and Evan is going to be gone for a while, unfortunately,” said Dobson.

"He's on crutches, so it's not a trivial knee injury.

“I just hope it doesn’t impact his aspirations at national level.

"I would be surprised if he plays for the Stormers again [this season],” Dobson added.

The injury is a massive blow for the talented player, who only recently returned to the playing field after suffering an injury on the Springboks' European tour at the end of last year.
