Stoffel Vandoorne reflects after becoming Formula E World Champion

Stoffel Vandoorne is the last Formula E World Champion of the Gen2 era, after sealing the title in the final race of the season on Sunday in South Korea.

The Belgian went into the final weekend with things firmly in his hands and he duly did the job he needed to seal victory in the standings by 33 points.

The championship went to the last day after Mitch Evans won race one of the weekend on Saturday to keep his hopes just about alive but, on Sunday, Vandoorne clinched second to take the crown, and also seal the perfect farewell for Mercedes EQ, who took the Teams’ championship for a second year running in their final campaign in the sport.

Reflecting on the achievement, Stoffel was rightly delighted:

“World Champion – wow. It is just the best feeling ever.

“Just look at the season we have had, the consistency, the car has been amazing. The team has done an amazing job and I think every single one of us deserves this. What we have accomplished is something special.

“Mitch has pushed me all the way along – the same with Edo [Mortara] – they were there all the time. It was really about the consistency in the end, they all have more wins than me, but I have the most podiums I think.

“It was difficult to focus because the pace at the end was so high, I knew Jake [Dennis] had a five-secondpenalty, so I had to stay close enough to him to secure P2. It was an awesome day, a lot ofconcentration. I am drained after this year, it has been a lot of effort, the effort I have put in and theteam has put in – it is incredible.”

Vandoorne is a worthy winner after a very consistent year, and the former Formula 1 driver can now call himself a world champion in the all-electric series, ahead of Gen3 next season.
