Stockport town hall's ballroom features on Strictly Come Dancing

Stockport town hall's spectacular ballroom took centre stage on tonight's Strictly Come Dancing. The grand Edwardian venue provided the backdrop as former Emmerdale star Adam Thomas and his dance partner Luba Mushtuk rehearsed to the Curtis Stigers' hit I Wonder Why.

Salford-born Adam, who is vying to lift this year’s Glitterball Trophy, was impressed with the space which features nine huge stained-glass windows, chandeliers and a Wurlitzer organ. He said: "The ballroom is absolutely beautiful and the architecture is amazing.

"I drive past the town hall every day and I never knew what was here inside. It's the perfect place to learn the waltz.

"It’s a brilliant event space and it's the best place we've rehearsed.” And it seems the hard work did the trick, with Adam and Luba being given a score of 32 by the judges - their best of the series so far.

Adam's brother, fellow actor Ryan, could even been seen shedding a tear in the audience. Judge Anton Du Beke admitted he was 'speechless' after the performance and praised the actor for having the best top line he had seen across the whole series.

Motsi Mabuse also agreed it was his 'best dance' since the series started. Adam, who is currently filming the the latest BBC school drama Waterloo Road in which he plays Donte Charles, lives in Stockport,

He said: "It's so up and coming and there’s so much happening at the moment. I have my bar Spinn Off in the Underbanks area of the town centre and it's a really great place to be."
