Stewartry RFC under-14s continue good start to season
Stewartry’s under-14 boys side have continued their unbeaten start to the season.
They kept up their good form with a win at Carlisle-based Creighton – a very competent and well drilled side.
From the outset, Stewartry dominant, although lost a few penalties for questioning the referee’s decisions which is all part of the learning curve.
They got their heads down, defended impeccably and were fierce at the scrum, pushing a very strong Creighton forwards pack numerous times to win turnovers. The team converted pressure into points and ran out 38-8 winners.
The referee complimented the team at the end saying they were one of the best under-14 teams he’d refereed – once they’d stopped questioning him!
The under-14s began their season in late August at an Annan under-13/14 team. After a rusty start they won 65-12. The following week there was a return home game against Annan and Stewartry were in their stride. After the first 20 minutes, they led 37-0, with the rest of the game played as a development match and the teams mixed to make the sides more balanced.
A festival match against Irvine was then cancelled so arranged a match at Moffat against Perthshire under-14s. They were a strong side and, even though they’d fielded a team the day before in a schools competition, took the lead early on. It was a very balanced and physical match, Stewartry’s determination paying off witha 26-19 win.
On Sunday, the team head to Stirling to face Stirling County, who are dominant in the Caledonian under-14s league. It will be another big test for the team but one the boys are ready for.
Last Sunday’s team sheet: Zander McGuire, Riley Sharpe, Dylan Thompson, Cameron Dodds, Liam Jack, Alfie McConchie, Jake McCubbin (captain), Fraser
