Stewartry RFC to get big day out at Murrayfield after all

Stewartry RFC will get their big day out at Murrayfield Stadium after all.

The Greenlaw side will face East Kilbride in the National Shield final on Saturday, May 6.

Initially, it had looked as if the game would be played in the evening at the Dam Health Stadium, home of Edinburgh Rugby.

However, negations between the two clubs and the SRU mean it will be the first game at BT Murrayfield on Silver Saturday finals day.

But it’ll be an early one as it will kick-off at 10am.

Club president, Jim Picken, said: “We were put on the outside pitch at six o’clock at night, which didn’t suit.

“We’ve been in touch with Murrayfield and argued our case and they’ve moved on to the international pitch at 10 o’clock in the morning, which is where we want to be.

“It obviously means a very early start but that’s where we’re going. We’ve got seven supporters buses going, which includes 100 from the mini section, which is fantastic.

“We’ve had fundraisers as we’re giving them free bus travel and free entry. We’re very appreciative of everybody who has donated to help do that.

“The boys are going out for a team meal with their partners the night before at The Thistle Inn at Crossmichael.

“We’re having a complimentary buffet and party night at the clubhouse when we get back, win or lose.

“All the buses are leaving the clubhouse about half six in the morning and coming back about half five at night.

“The clubhouse will be open, even for people who haven’t been to Murrayfield, if they want to come out to join in.

“We’re having a barbecue for all the players on the Sunday to make it a real special weekend.”

The Stewartry players will also look the part for their big day thanks to the generosity of sponsors.
