Steven Schumacher calls for specific Plymouth Argyle improvement

Plymouth Argyle manager Steven Schumacher has called on his defence to do better following his side’s draw with Fleetwood in which they conceded a last minute goal.

The game was full of goals and it finished 3-3. However, Argyle were leading for most of the second half but failed to keep control of the game. Fleetwood’s goal in the 92nd minute was the sucker punch for Plymouth and meant they only came away with one point rather than securing all three.

The Argyle boss gave his thoughts on his side’s defensive performance as he told the club’s official media: “We’re causing our own problems. We’re not defending well enough in too many areas of the pitch; just too many errors.

“When you don’t defend well enough you get punished.

“We didn’t defend in the last game from a set play and again tonight, last minute, from a set piece – we’re not pleased about that.

“We got ourselves 3-1 ahead and we didn’t manage to hold on to it because we’re just not defending well enough.”

His defensive players have received a fair amount of praise throughout the season so far as they were coming away from games with clean sheets and wins. However this month they have lost two games and drawn this one and Schumacher believes they need to get back into gear. He said: “The back lads have had praise throughout the season, as a team we’ve defended quite well. I just don’t think that we’re doing well enough at the moment.

“We’re not stopping enough crosses in wide areas, and then when he ball goes in our box, where we have been so solid and the lads have been getting leaders on things and getting it away, at the moment we’re not and we’re getting punished for it.”
