Steven Naismith right to rage at Hearts flops as I know not doing your homework will see you punished - Ryan Stevenson

There's an old quote from Jim Jefferies that has stuck with me over the years. He told us there are so many good players out there but the best ones retain information.

Jefferies was spot on. Players need to listen to what they are being told by their managers and backroom staff and then take those instructions on to the pitch. Players can do a lot of talking – but they need to listen. That’s what I loved about Steven Naismith’s response to Saturday’s shocker at Dundee. You could tell he was raging after the game.

I know some Hearts supporters were surprised by the fact he was quite hard on the boys after what looked like a bad day at the office. Naisy questioned whether the team had taken on the information they’d been given – as it didn’t look like it. They’ve worked on things all week and then lose three poor goals with things they have been warned about. It’s not on and the manager delivered a strong message.

Look, I know what it’s like being a player. Even back then, we used to get an email sent to us on a Friday night and it would be information about the team and individuals you were up against that weekend.

At the start the boys – myself included – would just bin it off and stick it straight in the spam folder! You’d think, ‘I know who I’m up against, what I can do, blah, blah…’

But you’d get caught out. Jim used to test you and you only got the chance to fool him once. Him and Billy Brown would quiz you on the fly. You’d be getting on the bus and they’d say, ‘This lad you’re up against, did you read that stuff about his left foot?’
