Steven MacLean insists “I will be confident whatever I do” as goalkeeper selection comes into focus

Ross Sinclair could be set for his big chance before the end of the season.

The Scone shot-stopper, a former Perth Academy student, has been playing second fiddle to experienced Remi Matthews since returning from a Montrose loan in January.

Interim boss Steven MacLean has helped guide Saints away from relegation bother with two games to spare and that may open the door for the former Scotland U21 international.

On Tuesday, ahead of the trip up to second-from-bottom Ross County, MacLean was keeping his cards close to his chest about team selection between the posts.

“They are both available,” he said. “I’ve an idea in my head what I’ll do.

“Remi has done well for us but Ross is good as well. Whether I play Ross two games, one game, I’m not sure yet. I will tell the players first.

“I will be confident whatever I do. If I play Ross, I’ll be confident about playing him.”

While Saints are safe, MacLean is targeting nothing other than wins against the Staggies and then Livingston on Sunday. He will not stand for sub-standard performances.

“The group have done well for me, they’ve been excellent,” MacLean said.

“I asked them to stay up and they’ve done it with two games spare.

“I am really happy but I want to win games. I want to win on Wednesday, I want to win.

“Whatever team I pick will be one that I think can win the game.”

He added: “If the players switch off mentality, listen, I won’t allow it. And if they do then they won’t play the next game. That’s the way I am.”
