Steven Gerrard turns to Rangers transfer guru in Ettifaq SOS as boss scrambles for January slack to save Saudi job
Under-pressure Steven Gerrard's job at Al-Ettifaq appears to be safe for now - with the boss reportedly being given the January window to save his season.
And that will see former Rangers ally Mark Allen play a major role in the fate of the Liverpool icon as he battles to keep his job in the Saudi Pro League. Gerrard boasts a star-studded team, which includes ex-Anfield pair Gini Wijnaldum and Jordan Henderson as well as ex Celtic striker Moussa Dembele and Scotland star Jack Hendry. But he has seen his side slide down the league table with the club having gone without a win in two months.
Ettifaq are way off the pace in the title race sitting in eighth but following the draw with rock-bottom Al-Hazm as Gerrard pleaded for more deals - and The Telegraph report the former Ibrox and Aston Villa boss will be given time to rescue the campaign with signings this month. They state there is "no signs of Gerrard being sacked imminently".
However, Gerrard and his team are said to have been made aware that the club have not been happy with results ahead of the mid-season break. And former Gers transfer guru Allen has finally arrived in Damman after months of talks.
Allen spent two years at Ibrox from 2017 and was credited as being largely responsible for persuading Gerrard to join Rangers. He led the recruitment under the boss before leaving for Swansea City in 2019. After giving him a start in the dugout if could fall to Allen to save his management career - with a Saudi flop potentially leaving a major stain on his record.
The arrival of Allen comes while Gerrard is set to lose another member of his key team. Gerrard's assistant coach Ian Foster, is set to take charge of Plymouth Argyle and replace Steven Schumacher.
