Steven Gerrard to 'educate' himself on Aston Villa contract situation

Steven Gerrard has admitted he needs to “educate” himself on Ashley Young’s Aston Villa contract, which is due to expire in the summer.

The 36-year-old is back in action after two months out, coming off the bench in the 3-3 draw with Leeds United this week.

Young could be thrust into the starting line-up by Gerrard at Newcastle United on Sunday if Emiliano Buendia, who has a hip issue, misses out.

With the second half of the campaign well underway, thoughts will soon turn to next season.

One issue that needs to be resolved is the future of Young, who signed a one-year deal when he returned to the club from Inter Milan last summer.

Gerrard addressed the veteran’s contract situation in his press conference ahead of the trip to St James’ Park.

“We'll get around to that at the right time,” he said. “You'll appreciate the window was very busy for us, a lot of activity, so we will get around to sitting down with Ash.

“I also need to sit down and learn more about his current deal and if there's any options there. I need to educate myself a little bit more about that.

“Ash is certainly someone we're happy with. He's training well. He's ready to go.

“He had a toe injury for a few weeks which put him back out of the team but he's pushing now to get more minutes and he's in a good place.”
