Steven Gerrard tipped to get rid of Aston Villa's £14m forgotten man

Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has tipped Morgan Sanson to leave Aston Villa this summer.

The midfielder has struggled for game time under Steven Gerrard and could leave Villa as a result when the window opens in June. Sanson has started just three Premier League games all season, with all of those appearances coming under Gerrard, having failed to earn any minutes of action under Dean Smith after recovering form injury earlier this campaign.

Sanson's last start came in the 2-1 defeat to Wolves at Molineux last month and he is currently out injured. Setbacks and a lack of fitness has affected Sanson's career at Villa Park to the extent that he has made just six starts since joining the club in January 2021, 15 months ago.

And former Villa forward Agbonlahor thinks a transfer away from Villa could be beneficial for both club and player. He told Football Insider: "You have to look at it, for him himself he will want to move on and play regularly. If Steven Gerrard’s got a transfer window to bring in more players and you’ve not been playing before the transfer window what chance have you got playing next season?

"He is one of the players that Steven Gerrard will probably move on. Sanson himself will want to move on and play football. He played a lot at Marseille so he will want to go somewhere where he’s playing regular and not where he is getting rare appearances, that’s not what a player wants."

It is unknown whether or not Sanson will recover from injury in time to make an impression for Villa in the final games of the season. The Frenchman is also reportedly of intent to Ligue 1 side Nantes, as well as Premier League club Crystal Palace.
