Steven Gerrard's 'shock' transfer tipped to push for a starting role at Aston Villa

Aston Villa completed several high profile signings in the January transfer window but the deal that came as the biggest surprise to fans was the unexpected announcement of Calum Chambers.

Chambers has arrived at Villa after signing a three-and-a-half-year-deal, after his contract at Arsenal was set to expire this summer.

Speaking to Football Insider, Alan Hutton had this to say regarding the deal: "They have been one of the best in terms of their overall window,”

“They have identified who they wanted and gone out and got the business done quietly. There hasn’t been a big noise about it.

“The Chambers one, I don’t think anyone saw that coming. It was a total shock.

“It was an area that Gerrard felt he needed some depth. He can play in various different positions.

“He can do a job at full-back, centre-half etcetera. He’s very versatile and a good age too.

“He will want to kick on and show he has what it takes to be a regular starter.”

Chambers has featured in both of the two friendlies Steven Gerrard organised in the winter break and played a key role in the build-up to Jacob Ramsey's stunning effort against FK Molde on Saturday.

With over 150 Premier League appearances to his name, Chambers offers a wealth of experience across multiple positions, which could eventually lead to Gerrard gifting the player a starting role if he impresses in training.
