Steven Gerrard reacts to Rangers reaching Europa League final

Steven Gerrard is ‘really proud’ of his former club Rangers after they stunned RB Leipzig to reach the Europa League final.

The Scottish club had it all to do after losing the first leg 1-0 at the Red Bull Arena, but goals from James Tavernier and Glen Kamara levelled up the scores at Ibrox on Thursday night.

Leipzig regained their lead through Christopher Nkunku, however, it was to be Rangers’ night as John Lundstram netted with 10 minutes to go.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side have set up a meeting in the final with Eintracht Frankfurt, who beat West Ham in their semi-final.

Gerrard, who guided Rangers to a first league title in 10 years last season before leaving to join Aston Villa in November, insisted their European triumph is ‘thoroughly deserved’.

‘What a night, what a game, what an atmosphere for everyone connected to the club,’ said Gerrard.

‘Really proud of everyone connected to Rangers last night, it was a great game to watch.

‘And, listen, it’s thoroughly deserved.

‘The journey they’ve been on, Gio [van Bronckhorst] and the boys, everyone connected to the club deserve an awful lot of credit.

‘One step to go, obviously I’ll be supporting from afar and I wish them all well.’
