Steven Gerrard makes Phil Foden prediction after he started on the bench for Man City vs Inter

Steven Gerrard sees Manchester City star Phil Foden becoming the best player in England.

Foden played an hour in Istanbul on Saturday night as City won their first Champions League and in doing so secured the Treble under Pep Guardiola. Kevin De Bruyne was forced off before half-time and on came Foden for his 48th appearance in all competitions.

Rodri slotted home the winning goal on 68 minutes and Foden was right in the middle of the post-match celebrations.

Foden's game time this season has been a hot topic of debate with the England international claiming just 22 starts in the Premier League. However, he hit double figures for goals for the first time in the top flight, scoring 11 and assisting a further five.

The 23-year-old has always had the backing of Guardiola and former Aston Villa manager Gerrard views Foden as a special talent. The Liverpool legend feels the Citystar would walk into any other European team and that his substitute appearances only emphasise the strength of Guardiola's squad.

"The best sign of all is that Phil Foden can’t get in the starting XI," the former Liverpool man told BT Sport, prior to Saturday evening's final in Turkey. "Because for me, he’s going to be the best player in the country. For me, he’s a phenomenal little footballer.

"He’s got incredible talent, ability, balance. If he can’t get in the XI it shows how strong this City team are because for me he walks into any other team, probably in European football."
