Steven Gerrard makes honest admission after Aston Villa’s defeat to Arsenal

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard is under huge pressure following his side’s 2-1 defeat at Arsenal and has admitted he is fearing for his job.

Gerrard’s side have won just three of their last 16 Premier League games after a poor finish to last season and a disastrous start to 2022-23, with Villa 19th after their five five fixtures.

The Liverpool legend took over at Villa last year following a successful spell with Rangers in Scotland, but he has not been able to replicate that since he switched clubs and could become the second boss to face the sack this season after Bournemouth opted to relieve Scott Parker of his duties on Tuesday.

Asked in his post-match interview if he had concerns over his future as Villa manager, Gerrard told BT Sport: ‘Of course I do.

‘I’m really honest and self-critical of myself. I’ll do my job the best I can. I’ll step forward, I’ll take the responsibility.

‘If I stood here and said to you that I wasn’t concerned, I think you would look at me as if I was on a different planet.’

Speaking specifically about Villa’s defeat to Arsenal, Gerrard added: ‘We worked ever so hard to stay in the game and stay with Arsenal.
