Steven Gerrard makes Douglas Luiz transfer point as Aston Villa 'decide against' £50m move

The January transfer window slammed shut at 11pm last night without Aston Villa adding to the five signings they made during the window.

Philippe Coutinho, Lucas Digne, Calum Chambers, Robin Olsen and Kerr Smith all joined the club, while Matt Targett left on loan in a deadline day switch to Newcastle United.

Reports claimed that Villa "decided against" an ambitious move for Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma, while the club also turned down a third bid for Douglas Luiz, as per reports.

Here are the latest Villa headlines...

Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz was the reportedly the subject of a deadline day bid from an unnamed club.

Villa have rejected the bid which came after they had already turned down two approaches for their Brazil international, according to The Athletic.

The report adds that Villa want to keep the midfielder and tie him down to a new long-term contract.

Luiz, 23, has admirers at both Arsenal and Newcastle United, while Tottenham Hotspur were also credited with an interest this month.

He has 18 months left on his current deal at Villa Park and will enter the final 12 months of his contract at the end of the season unless he signs fresh terms.

Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett has joined Newcastle United on loan until the end of the season.

The 26-year-old has left Villa Park in search of regular football following Lucas Digne's arrival at the club from Everton.
