Steven Bergwijn ‘cannot afford’ more Tottenham woe as he opens up on Conte impact in exit decision

Steven Bergwijn has admitted that he wants to leave Tottenham because he “cannot afford” another season of frustration over game time.

The Netherlands international moved to north London as a Jose Mourinho signing in 2020 and immediately impressed. His goal on debut in a win over Manchester City saw him hit the ground running.

Despite that, though, he has struggled to keep a regular place in the team.

Under current Tottenham manager Antonio Conte, Bergwijn has had similarly impressive moments. However, impacts such as a game-winning brace at the death against Leicester in January have come few and far between.

As a result, Bergwijn recently revealed that he wants to leave Spurs this summer, with Ajax the transfer frontrunners.

The 24-year-old has subsequently doubled down on his comments in a fresh interview with De Telegraaf.

“Several clubs have come forward,” Bergwijn said. “Now I just have to find a solution for myself that benefits both parties. I’m leaving.”

Bergwijn has struggled for match action throughout his Tottenham tenure and Conte’s arrival has not helped his cause.

In fact, the Italian signed Dejan Kulusevski in January and the Swede has formed a dangerous triumvirate with Harry Kane and Son Heung-min up front.

However, Bergwijn insisted that he has no issues with Conte over his selection choices.

“We’ve talked about that. But no, I don’t feel cheated,” the attacker said. “I respect his choices and I have no problem with him at all.

“In the games I came in, I showed what I can do, scored my goals and provided assists.

“At one point I really didn’t know what to do to get into the team. However, I never made any problems.
