Steve Morison thanks West Brom boss for 'not fancying' Cardiff City new boy Jordan Hugill as Leeds United loanee 'frightening'

Cardiff City manager Steve Morison gave his thanks to West Brom boss Valerien Ismael for allowing him to land his No.1 striker target Jordan Hugill.

Hugill was announced as a City player an hour before the teams were revealed prior to the win over Nottingham Forest.

The 29-year-old was slotted straight into the starting line-up and repaid the manager's faith by scoring just six minutes into the victory over Steve Cooper's men.

The last 48 hours had been a whirlwind for the Bluebirds manager and the player, who had seen very little game-time at The Hawthorns this season.

"That's why I brought him in the building," Morison said.

"Thankfully, the manager at West Brom didn't fancy him anymore.

"Like I said in the press conference. I was waiting on other people because I knew what I wanted to do and I knew the players I wanted to bring in.

"I was on the press conference and the phone was going and then I got off the press conference and I had two new signings in 20 minutes!

"Nothing had happened until then and that's who we were waiting on. But let's not get carried away, we've won a game."

Hugill has scored only one goal this season while on loan from Norwich City to West Brom, but perhaps that doesn't tell the whole story.

Morison said players, especially strikers, are judged purely on stats sometimes, but the manager believes Hugill's all-round game will see him lift others in the back end of the campaign.

"Jordan Hugill is an excellent, excellent Championship football player," he added.

"People get caught up in the stats when it comes to strikers and goals. He has always performed really well in a two.
