Steve McClaren pinpoints crucial trait Erik ten Hag has brought to Manchester United

Steve McClaren believes Manchester United now have the right team spirit required to be a successful side under Erik ten Hag this season.

United begin their new Premier League campaign this weekend when they host Brighton at Old Trafford, after a productive summer schedule under the guidance of their new manager. Ten Hag has already implemented many fresh ideas and beliefs at United, while overhauling the playing squad with a number of key additions.

It will still take time before the Dutchman has all the players he wants in the right style of play, but assistant coach McClaren believes United already have a number of attributes that money can't buy under Ten Hag.

“This group has been fantastic. I get a great feeling,” he told club media. “I’ve been into many, many dressing rooms and many dressing rooms for the first two, three, four weeks. You kind of know and can smell [it].

“I’ve got a good feeling about this dressing room. You can’t win football matches without it [team spirit].

"You cannot win. You have to have a good environment. You have to have a good culture. You have to have players willing to run, and that’s the key.

“You’ve got to work hard to create chances and opportunities and then execute them.

“The demands are there and that’s what creates a great environment. I can see that spirit. It’s great coming from the outside; coming in, with no preconceptions about the culture and environment and it’s clean and it’s gone.”
